CHICAGO – A five-run eighth inning propelled the University of Chicago baseball team to a come-from-behind, 8-5 nonleague win over host Illinois Tech in the two team's annual game at Guaranteed Rate Field, home of MLB's White Sox, on Wednesday night.
Junior Payton Jancsy led the way offensively with a perfect 4-for-4 performance with three RBI, two doubles and two stolen bases. Senior Connor Hickey added a single with two RBI – occurring in that clutch eighth inning – and later stole home to create the final score for the Maroons (18-6).
Illinois Tech's (15-18) bats got hot first though, as the Scarlet Hawks scored two runs in the second, another in the third, and two in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. Maroons' senior Max Brzostowski singled and scored on a wild pitch in the top of the third to give UChicago its lone run during that stretch.
A Jancsy RBI-double in the fifth scored all-time runs leader Hickey and Jancsy plated James Kelly with an RBI-single in the seventh to cut the IIT lead to two, at 5-3. That set up the five-run eighth, where the Maroons recorded four hits – singles by Brady Sarkon, Benjamin Rosengard, Hickey, and Jancsy – two walks and a hit by pitch to net five runs and take the lead.
Maroon relievers Patrick Murphy – who earned his first win of the year – and David Clarke (two strikeouts and the save) kept the Scarlet Hawks off the scoreboard in the final two innings to secure the victory.
In a staff day that featured eight UChicago's pitchers, Patrick Rogers (three strikeouts) walked one and struck out the rest in his notable sixth-inning appearance.
