BELOIT, Wis. – The University of Chicago baseball team shook off a rough first game and rebounded in game two to go 1-1 at Beloit College on Saturday.
The Maroons moved to 21-9 overall and 9-5 in the Midwest Conference North Division. The Bucs are now 16-16 (7-7 MWC North).
Game One – Beloit 19, UChicago 0
The hosts jumped all over the Maroons with a 13-run third inning. UChicago gave up seven hits and committed three errors in the frame. The contest ended after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.
Game Two – UChicago 6, Beloit 4
With his team in need of a victory in the conference race, senior Joe Liberman took the hill for UChicago. The right-hander delivered yet another solid outing, going 6.2 innings with seven strikeouts and two runs allowed. His season record improved to 5-0 with the win.
Beloit got one run in the third inning and threatened to add more with the bases loaded. However, Liberman coaxed a groundout to escape.
UChicago's offense took a while to warm up, but eventually tied the game in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by senior outfielder Connor Hickey. Then in the sixth, junior outfielder Payton Jancsy's leadoff double paid dividends as he scored on sophomore second baseman James Kelly's RBI groundout.
Valuable insurance runs appeared in the top of the seventh as well. Hickey walked and moved to second on a failed pickoff, which allowed sophomore shortstop Brian Lyle to drive him in with a single. After a pitching change, Jancsy greeted the reliever with a RBI triple to right center. He then scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-1.
The Bucs got one back in the bottom of the seventh, and UChicago responded with Hickey's RBI fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the eighth.
Tension arrived in the bottom of the ninth. Beloit strung together three-straight singles with two outs to shave the deficit to 6-4. But sophomore reliever David Clarke closed out the game with a fielder's choice to secure the W.
The Maroons finished with 10 hits, including two each from Lyle, Jancsy, first-year third baseman Benjamin Rosengard and first-year catcher Brett Riegler. A trio of relief pitchers finished the game with junior Patrick Rogers (0.1 IP), senior Ravi Bakhai (1 IP, 3 K) and Clarke (1 IP).
