CHICAGO – The University of Chicago baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision at Illinois-Chicago Tuesday night in nonleague play, but gave up just three hits to the Flames.
The Maroons (23-10) are now off until Friday's start of the Midwest Conference Baseball Championships, set for Friday-Saturday in Galesburg, Ill., and Monmouth, Ill.
UChicago first-year Benjamin Rosengard led the Maroon offense with two hits and classmate Brett Riegler had the team's lone RBI, a single to center field that put the visitors on the board in the top of the seventh.
UIC (21-20) took a 2-0 lead to start the game, scoring one run each in the second and fourth innings. Rosengard led off the top of the seventh with a single to left and later advanced to second on a passed ball. After a Parks walk and Rosengard's advance to third on a wild pitch, Riegler's single to center plated his teammate to make it just a one-run lead, 2-1.
But the Flames scored two more in the eighth to push the lead to the final score.
In a staff day for the Maroon pitching staff, UChicago's seven pitchers combined to allow just three UIC hits, but walked nine.
