CHICAGO – At the conclusion of its first season in the Midwest Conference, the University of Chicago baseball team collected six league honors on Sunday. Five players were picked to the All-Midwest Conference North Division Team.
Outfielder Connor Hickey received the honor in his final season. The leadoff hitter batted .313 on the year and tied for the team lead with 38 runs scored. He posted six doubles, one triple, one home run, 21 RBI and 14 stolen bases. His disciplined eye at the plate resulted in 25 walks versus only 13 strikeouts.
Pitcher Joe Liberman concluded his career with a standout senior campaign. The righthander tied for the team lead in victories at 6-0. Over 10 appearances and three starts, he owned a 2.08 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 39 innings pitched. Opponents hit a mere .201 against him.
Outfielder Payton Jancsy put together his best season while hitting in the top three in the order throughout the year. The junior posted a .361 batting average with a team-best 38 runs to go with 13 steals. He led the team in doubles (8) and triples (6) while adding 26 RBI. He worked 14 walks as well.
Shortstop Brian Lyle made an impact with his bat and glove. As a sophomore, he paced the Maroons with a .378 batting average and 19 stolen bases. He scored 30 runs, knocked in 24, walked 10 times and was hit by seven pitches. Lyle also helped turn 18 doubles plays.
Rookie Carson Weekley earned All-MWC honors at third base. The first-year led the squad with a .545 slugging percentage, thanks to eight doubles, two triples and three home runs. He batted .355 overall with 29 runs, 24 RBI and 19 walks. He also manufactured a team-best .462 on-base percentage.
John Fitzgerald was named the MWC North Division Coach of the Year as well. UChicago finished the year with a 24-12 record and reached the MWC Tournament. The Maroons won the North Division with an 11-5 mark. His team led the league in batting average (.307) and ERA (3.58).
