UChicago Baseball Bashes Way to Doubleheader Sweep of IWU

IMPERIAL, Mo. – The University of Chicago baseball team rode a potent offensive attack to win both ends of a neutral doubleheader against Illinois Wesleyan University on Sunday.

The Maroons have now won their opening three games of the season. The Titans dropped to 2-2.

Game One – UChicago 14, IWU 5

Once the bats got rolling, they could not be silenced as UChicago scored in each of the first six innings. By the middle of the sixth inning, the Maroons staked themselves to an impressive 14-1 lead.

The long ball was on tap as UChicago cranked three out of the park. Sophomore Benjamin Rosengard cracked a two-run homer in the second inning. Fellow sophomore Carson Weekley added two of his own with a solo shot to left in the third inning and a three-run bomb to center in the fifth. First-years Matthew Guyton and Hayden Brotz contributed RBI doubles as well.

UChicago finished with 13 hits and one error in the box score. Weekley went 3-for-5 with five RBI while Rosengard batted 3-for-4 with two RBI. Guyton hit 2-for-4 with two RBI as well.

On the mound, Tyler Sarkisian made his first collegiate start. He pitched four innings with two hits, one run, three walks and three strikeouts. Rookie Dylan White got the win with two innings of middle relief. Junior David Clarke was dominant in his three-inning stint that featured one hit allowed and three strikeouts.

Game Two – UChicago 11, IWU 4

The hits just kept coming in the second game. UChicago remained hot, scoring one in the first inning, six in the second, three in the third and one more in the fourth.

IWU took a brief lead with a two-run homer in the top of the first. But by the second frame, the Maroons were in complete control. Weekley halved the deficit with a single in the first, then senior Nate Hendley knocked a two-run double to right center to give his team the lead. Junior James Kelly rocked a three-run homer immediately after. Weekley added an RBI double to close out the second inning.

Weekley and senior Payton Jancsy combined to provide six of the team's 10 hits in the game, while adding two RBI each. Kelly ended up knocking in four runs.

It was a staff day as six pitchers saw action – Rosengard (2 IP), junior Zach Morochnik (1 IP), first-year Cole Silva (3 IP), senior Daniel Smith (1 IP, 3 K), senior Arno Curtis (1 IP) and Guyton (1 IP, 2 K). Morochnik was credited with the win.
