LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Chicago baseball team fell victim to a pair of big innings in an 8-6 loss at Transylvania University on Sunday.
The Maroons absorbed their first loss of the year, moving their season record to 5-1. The Pioneers improved to 4-5.
Senior Payton Jancsy led off the game with a double and scored two batters later on a passed ball. Transylvania later answered in the bottom of the fourth inning with five runs on seven hits.
UChicago was playing catch up from there. In the top of the fifth, sophomore Benjamin Rosengard smacked a two-run double to left field. Then in the sixth, junior Eisuke Tanioka recorded an RBI groundout to draw within 5-4. However, the home side scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh.
The Maroons trimmed the deficit once again with a pair of solo homers in the eighth by first-year Matthew Guyton and Tanioka. Those would be the final tallies of the game as Transylvania closed out the victory.
UChicago totaled eight hits and one error on the day. Jancsy and Tanioka both hit 2-for-4. Sophomore Brett Riegler went 1-for-2 with two walks.
