Maroon football falls to No. 11-ranked Bethel, 52-21

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The University of Chicago football team suffered its first loss of the season 52-21 to No. 11-ranked Bethel University on Saturday. The Maroons dropped to 5-1 and the Royals (5-1) won their fifth-straight game.

Both offenses posted big numbers on the afternoon. UChicago gained a season-high 391 yards with a balanced attack that included 202 passing yards and 189 rushing yards. Bethel was particularly effective throwing the ball, completing 19 of 23 passes for 320 yards while also adding 135 yards rushing.

UChicago was first on the board on the game's opening drive. Senior quarterback Patrick Ryan found sophomore wide receiver John Gormley for a 54-yard completion to get into Bethel territory. Junior kicker Karol Kurzydlowski followed soon after with a 34-yard field goal.

Bethel got the lead right back on its first drive by traveling 76 yards on nine plays, which was capped by a five-yard touchdown pass. On the next possession, UChicago tossed a 32-yard touchdown on fourth down that was negated by a penalty. The Royals took the break and proceeded to march 90 yards for another touchdown to go up 14-3.

In the middle of the second quarter, the Maroon offense ate up six minutes of game clock by calling 11 runs out of 13 plays. The running plays gained sizable chunks and a fourth-down conversion gave the visitors first-and-goal. Freshman running back Chandler Carroll immediately burst into the end zone from 10 yards out to make the score 14-9.

The Royals closed out the half with momentum in hand on a 12-yard touchdown pass to increase the lead to 21-9. The home side scored twice more on consecutive possessions in the third quarter to make the score 33-9.

The fourth quarter was particularly action packed with a combined five touchdowns. Ryan completed scoring passes of 30 yards and 43 yards to junior wide receivers Sam Coleman and Colin Macri, respectively.

Carroll set a career high with 134 rushing yards on 27 rushes and one touchdown. Ryan completed 9 of his 19 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns. Gormley made two catches for 61 yards, while Coleman hauled in two receptions for 47 yards and one touchdown.

UChicago senior defensive end Brandon Bolock had a banner day on special teams with three blocked PATs. He also recorded seven tackles and returned an interception for 24 yards to set up a fourth-quarter touchdown. Junior safety Greg Thome posted a team-high 11 tackles. Sophomore linebacker Jackson Garrey made nine tackles and one tackle for a loss. Senior linebacker Schuyler Montefalco totaled seven tackles and one tackle for a loss.
