CHICAGO – University of Chicago football was well-represented with eight selections on the 2017 All-Midwest Conference Team, as announced on Wednesday.
Five players were named to the First Team North Division and three received spots on the Second Team North Division, while defensive tackle Jackson Ross won special recognition as the North Division Newcomer of the Year.
Ross, a first-year lineman, was also picked Second Team All-MWC (North Division). The rookie totaled a team-high 85 tackles on the season. He got into the back field for seven tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Ross also intercepted one pass.
Leading the way on the First Team All-MWC was senior running back Chandler Carroll. In his final year with the Maroons, Carroll capped off a stellar career with 1,249 rushing yards – averaging 4.8 per carry. He rushed for more than 100 yards in six games, with a season-high of 249. He also added 251 receiving yards on a team-high 28 catches. His 18 total touchdowns set a new single-season school record and ranked 12th in NCAA Division III. Carroll ended his career ranked second in UChicago history with 3,979 rushing yards and is the all-time leader in total touchdowns (46).
Two of the offensive lineman that cleared the way for Carroll joined him on the First Team: junior right guard Tucker Squiers and sophomore center Doug Barkauski. The Maroons averaged 27.3 points and 339.6 yards of total offense per game. In the run game, UChicago averaged 4.3 yards per carry and 190.6 rushing yards per game.
Senior defensive end Peter Casey and junior safety Jeremy Vincent were First Team picks defensively. Casey led the MWC with 19.5 tackles for loss – the 12th most in NCAA Division III. He also added a team-high eight sacks, made 56 tackles and two fumble recoveries. Vincent snagged a team-best four interceptions and broke up four passes in the secondary. He tallied 42 tackles, two tackles for loss and recovered two fumbles.
Jamie Rieger concluded his senior season with a spot on the Second Team Offense. The wide receiver caught 26 passes for 354 yards for an average of 13.6 yards per catch. He also grabbed two touchdowns.
Ryan Montgomery earned selection to the Second Team Defense. The rookie cornerback was second on the team with 63 tackles. He broke up six passes, hauled in two interceptions and forced two fumbles. Montgomery added 1.5 tackles for loss.
UChicago finished in second place in the MWC North Division, posting a 6-4 record overall.
