CHICAGO – University of Chicago Head Football Coach Chris Wilkerson announced that Zach Atiyeh, Dante Nepa, Matt Zimmerman and Ryan Montgomery will serve as team captains for the 2019 season.

"We are excited to announce our 2019 captains," Wilkerson said. "Great leadership is crucial to the success of any organization. These four captains personify all the standards and expectations we have as a football family.

"They are all passionate about everything they do – guys with tremendous determination and true grit," he continued. "Each of them are great ambassadors who are going to represent our football family well on and off the field. Guys who will make good decisions and are committed to the team, their teammates and the total UChicago experience. They are all hard workers and have shown tremendous dedication during their time in the program. I look forward to watching them continue to grow as men and lead our football team this fall."

Atiyeh enters his second year as a team captain. The rising senior linebacker was a Second Team All-Midwest Conference selection last year. Over the 10 games, he ranked second on the team with 71 tackles while adding four tackles for loss, two interceptions, five passes defended and one fumble recovery.

Nepa is also a two-time team captain at his wide receiver position. The rising senior played all 10 games, totaling 27 receptions for 311 yards (11.5 yards per catch). Nepa scored five touchdowns as well.

Rising senior Zimmerman will be a captain as part of the offensive line. He played in 10 games last year, primarily starting at guard. Zimmerman contributed to an offensive unit that averaged a school-record 36.5 points per game while gaining 375 yards per game.

Montgomery will begin his junior campaign as a team captain. The cornerback started the opening three games last fall before sustaining a season-ending injury. In that time, he recorded 21 tackles, one interception, three passes defended and 0.5 tackles for loss. Previously, he was a Second Team All-MWC selection in 2017.

The Maroons concluded 2018 with a 7-3 record and a second-place finish second in the MWC North Division. The 2019 season opener is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 7 as UChicago hosts Washington University - St. Louis at 6:00 PM on the Stagg Field turf.
