CHICAGO – Four University of Chicago student-athletes were recognized as University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week on Tuesday.
The UAA Volleyball Offensive Athlete of the Week was senior Maren Loe. The outside hitter got off to a hot start in the opening week of the season and guided the offense to a 4-0 record. UChicago swept three teams and capped the Gargoyle Classic with a 3-2 victory over No. 3-ranked and defending NCAA champion Hope College. In that match, Loe posted 26 kills and 15 digs. Her efforts earned Gargoyle Classic MVP honors. Over four matches this year, Loe has 75 kills (5.36 per set), 11 service aces, 38 digs (2.71 per set) and eight blocks.
In men’s soccer, goalkeeper Hill Bonin garnered UAA Defensive Athlete of the Week. UChicago’s stout defense allowed only one goal in three victories over the past week, with Bonin tallying 11 saves in that time for a .917 save percentage. The sophomore shut out two opponents and now has nine shutouts in 17 career starts.
Sophomore Khia Kurtenbach was the UAA Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week after a stellar collegiate debut. Kurtenbach was the medalist in her first cross country race, topping the nine-team field at the University of St. Francis (Ill.) Invitational on Friday. Her winning time of 18:41.4 led the runner-up by 2.7 seconds in the 5K race. The Maroons went on to win the invite after capturing five of the top six individual spots.
The UAA Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week honor went to junior Gareth Jones. The Maroons placed second out of 11 teams in the men’s 5K race at St. Francis. Jones was the team’s top finisher with a runner-up time of 15:38.1.
