Johnson Continues Scoring Surge as Maroons Win

CHICAGO -- Coming off a 49-point performance Friday night, senior Matt Johnson (Ann Arbor, Mich./ Pioneer) poured in 36 points to lead the University of Chicago to a 96-92 win over the University of Rochester in University Athletic Association men's basketball action Sunday at the Ratner Athletics Center.

Game Summary

  • Despite only two lead changes and five ties, the game was close throughout, as neither team led by more than nine points.

  • Sophomore Derrick Davis' (Saginaw, Mich./ Bridgeport) jumper in the closing seconds of the first half evened the score at 45-45 at the break.

  • Chicago (11-7 overall, 4-3 UAA) started the second half with an 8-2 run and remained in the lead the rest of the way.

  • Rochester (11-7, 2-5) cut the gap to 94-92 on a Nate Vernon 3-pointer with :09 to go, but Johnson hit a pair of free throws on the Maroons' next possession to seal the victory.

Statistical Highlights

  • Johnson became the 15th Chicago player to reach the 1,000 career point plateau. He ended the day with 1,011 points.

  • Johnson was perfect on 15 free throws , including eight in the game's final two minutes. He also handed out eight assists.

  • Senior Tom Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/ St. Xavier) added 13 points in 18 minutes off the bench, while Davis (pictured) tallied 11 in 19 minutes as a reserve.

  • Senior Michael Sustarsic (Liberty, Ind./ Union County) scored 11 points.

  • John DiBartolomeo finished with 22 points and a game-high nine assists for Rochester.

  • Vernon (20), Nate Novosel (18), Rob Reid (11), and Tyler Seidman (10) also netted double digits for the Yellowjackets.

  • Chicago shot 59.2% from the field and connected on 9-of-17 three-point attempts (52.9%).


  • With scoring performances of 44, 49, and 36 points, Johnson has averaged 43.0 points over his last three outings.

  • Sunday's game marked the 50th meeting between the two schools. Rochester leads the series 26-24.

  • Chicago defeated the Yellowjackets at the Ratner Center for the fourth straight year.
