CHICAGO -- Seniors Matt Johnson (Ann Arbor, Mich./ Pioneer) and Tom Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/ St. Xavier) (pictured) combined to score 42 points as the University of Chicago defeated Franklin College 83-68 in non-conference men's basketball action Saturday night at the Ratner Athletics Center.
Franklin (1-1) scored the game's first nine points, but the Maroons quickly recaptured the lead, 12-11. The Grizzlies held their last edge of the night, 22-20, with 7:09 to go in the first half before Chicago (2-0) rallied to take 37-31 lead at the intermission.
Chicago held a single-digit lead for the first 12 minutes of the second half, then led by at least 10 points for the final 7:51.
Johnson led the way for Chicago with a game-high 26 points, while Williams and senior Tommy Sotos (Elk Grove, Ill./ Conant) added 16 and 11, respectively.
Bailey Howard paced Franklin with 20 points. Clay Starrett chipped in 12.
The teams combined to attempt 67 free throws. Chicago hit 22 of 35 tries (62.9%), while the Grizzlies connected on 23 of 32 (71.9%).
Johnson and junior Matt MacKenzie (Okemos, Mich./ Okemos) each grabbed eight rebounds for the Maroons. Franklin's Will Conoley finished with seven.
Saturday's game marked the first meeting between Chicago and Franklin.
Chicago has won three straight games at the Ratner Center dating back to last season.
Chicago hosts Lake Forest College Tuesday at 8 p.m.
