UChicago men's basketball falls to Emory 82-59

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago men's basketball team fell victim to hot three-point shooting as visiting Emory University defeated the Maroons 82-59 on Sunday.

The Maroons dropped to 10-12 overall and 4-7 in the UAA. The Eagles improved to 15-6 overall, 7-4 in UAA action.

Before tip-off of its final home of the season, UChicago recognized lone senior Matt MacKenzie on the court. MacKenzie played a solid final game in the Ratner Athletics Center, tallying nine points and three rebounds in 17 minutes played.

It was all Emory from the outset, however. The Eagles hit a trio of treys to go up 9-0 early. On the defensive end, Emory consistently threw a double-team trap at UChicago's guards and created turnovers at the top of the key. Fast-break layups in transition and dead-eye shooting from three-point land (5-for-8) put the Eagles ahead 30-9 with eight minutes left in the first half.

Point guard Royce Muskeyvalley was the main engine of the Maroons offense early on. The sophomore aggressively looked for his shot and scored nine of the team's first 13 points. Back-to-back threes by Wayne Simon gave UChicago a little momentum to cut the deficit to 34-19. The hosts eventually went into halftime trailing 40-30 as the offense started to execute effectively.

At the break, Emory had already tallied 18 points off 11 UChicago turnovers, while shooting 54.2 percent from the floor. The Maroons shot 47.2 percent in the half, with nine points each from Muskeyvalley and Charlie Hughes.

UChicago came out with good energy and increased ball movement in the second half. The quicker decision making on offense pulled the Maroons within five points at 42-37. Emory responded by penetrating the lane and sprinting in for layups, while also kicking out for open threes when the paint clogged up. A 14-5 run gave the Eagles a 61-47 lead and they kept the advantage the rest of the game.

Emory nailed 10 of 21 three-pointers in the game. After being outrebounded by 18 at Emory back in January, UChicago was strong on the boards by a 37-32 margin.
