Maroons men's basketball handed first loss by Augustana 70-52

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Poor shooting in the first half proved costly for the University of Chicago men's basketball team in a 70-52 loss to Augustana College on Saturday.

The Maroons fell to 3-1 while the Vikings improved to 3-0.

Both teams played evenly for the first nine minutes of the game, with Augustana leading 19-15. From there, the visitors took over the half with bruising play in the post and tough defense that contested every UChicago shot. The Vikings closed out the half on a 16-3 run to go up 35-18 at the break.

The shots weren't falling for the Maroons in the opening stanza. The home team was held to 28 percent shooting (8 of 29) from the field. Blocks were plentiful, as UChicago collected five and Augustana swatted three over the first 20 minutes.

The Vikings flexed their muscle in the paint in the second half as well, throwing fresh waves of tall players at the Maroons. Most of Augustana's points came within five feet of the basket with guards feeding the post every time down the floor.

UChicago was more efficient offensively in the second half, as the Maroons hitting 48 percent (13 of 27) of their shots. However, the Vikings kept pace by converting at a 50 percent clip (13 of 26). Augustana maintained its double-digit lead the rest of the game.

The Maroons finished the game shooting 37.5 percent from the floor (21 of 56), 23.1 percent from three-point range (3 of 13), and 46.7 percent from the charity stripe (7 of 15). UChicago also blocked nine shots overall. The Vikings led the rebounding battle 40-30.
