CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The University of Chicago men's basketball team rallied back from a double-digit deficit late in the second half, but Case Western Reserve University held on to win in the final minute 64-61 on Friday.
The Maroons dropped to 8-9 overall and 2-4 in conference games. The Spartans (9-8 overall, 2-4 UAA) snapped their four-game losing streak.
Both sides exchanged leads over the first 12 minutes, with UChicago going up 19-17 on a three-pointer by guard Royce Muskeyvalley. Tim Chung responded by swishing four three-pointers off the bench and scoring 12 of Case's next 14 points. The Spartans went on to convert seven-straight shots to go up 33-23.
The hosts led 33-25 at halftime while making 46 percent of their shots from the field. UChicago shot 37 percent, with seven points by Muskeyvalley and six points from forward Sam Gage.
A trio of threes by the Spartans sparked an 11-2 run at the start of the second half, pushing the advantage to 17 points. Slowly but surely, the Maroons whittled away at the deficit and did not allow a point for a seven-minute stretch. UChicago scored 12 unanswered points in that time and took a 61-60 lead on Jordan Smith's jumper with 2:32 left in the game.
However, a technical foul was called on the Maroons and Case retook the lead on the resulting free throws. A layup in the paint extended the margin to 64-61 with 1:23 left in the game. UChicago had a few chances to tie and send the game into overtime in the final minute. But the three-pointers did not fall, and the Spartans came away with the victory.
The Maroons held a narrow rebounding edge overall (35-33) and pulled down 15 offensive boards. Case turned the ball over 14 times compared to 10 by UChicago.
