UChicago men's basketball falls to Lake Forest in overtime 60-56

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Lake Forest College tied the game in the final minute of regulation and then outlasted the University of Chicago men's basketball team in overtime 60-56 on Saturday.

The Maroons ran their record to 4-3. The Foresters improved to 2-5.

UChicago grabbed control of the game from the onset offensively, taking a 19-8 lead with 7:31 left in the first half. But from that point on, Lake Forest made a big run of its own, scoring 17 of the next 21 points to go up 25-23 at halftime. The first half featured rough shooting as the two teams combined to make 34 percent from the field in the opening half (19 of 56).

The Maroons used the break to recover and then went on a 16-4 offensive run in the second half. UChicago staked itself to a nine-point lead with 12 minutes left following a three-pointer by Jordan Smith.

Once again, the Foresters rallied back to tie and every possession proved critical down the stretch. Alex Pyper's jumper put UChicago up four points with two minutes left, and LFC's Brian Madson responded with a three-pointer on the next shot to cut it back to one point. Chris Madson then tied the game at 52-52 with 38 seconds remaining. The Maroons missed a free throw with eight seconds left and a trey attempt at the buzzer by the Foresters did not go down, forcing overtime.

In overtime, Lake Forest led 57-56 with 1:14 left. A UChicago turnover and a layup the other way made it 59-56. The Maroons couldn't convert a three-pointer the next trip down the floor and a Lake Forest free throw with three seconds on the clock clinched the win.

UChicago shot a season-low 36.7 percent from the field (22 of 60), hit 21.7 percent from beyond the arc (5 of 23) and 46.7 percent from the free throw line (7 of 15). The rebounding category was even at 46 for each side.

Lake Forest was held to 31.8 percent shooting from the field (21 of 66), 30.4 percent on threes (7 of 23) and 57.9 percent from the charity stripe (11 of 19).
