UChicago men's basketball shoots past Dominican 83-64; McGrath picks up 200th career victory

CHICAGO, Ill. -- A nearly-historic shooting night by the University of Chicago men's basketball team gave Head Coach Mike McGrath his 200th career victory in an 83-64 win over Dominican University on Monday.

The Maroons got back above .500 and moved to 5-4 on the season. The Stars dropped their third-straight game to fall to 3-7.

UChicago led wire-to-wire in the game thanks to one of its best shooting nights in years. The Maroons made 69.4 percent of their shots from the field (34-49), including 69.2 percent from three-point range (9-13). The school record for field-goal percentage was set in 1994-95 against Grinnell College at 72.3 percent.

The closest Dominican came was when the Stars pulled within two points at 11-9. But the Maroons showed a lot of energy in the first half with its perimeter defense and made the visitors work deep into the shot clock. The home side forced several shot clock violations and were beastly on the boards, outrebounding Dominican 20-6 in the first half.

On the offensive end, UChicago was super efficient thanks to good shot selection and extra passes that led to open jumpers. Point guard Royce Muskeyvalley was the catalyst, handing out nine assists in the game to go with his 12 points from inside and outside.

The Maroons went into halftime up 40-22. Dominican came out with energy of its own in the second half and the two sides scored evenly over the final 20 minutes. However, UChicago's lead did not dip below 14 points the rest of the way as the hot shooting continued throughout. The trio of Muskeyvalley, Charlie Hughes and Alex Pyper combined for 39 points on 16 of 18 shooting from the field (88.9 percent).

UChicago finished the game with a plus-10 rebounding differential (32-22). Dominican turned the ball over six times compared to nine turnovers by the Maroons.

The victory marked the 200th in the career of Mike McGrath (200-141), who is in his 14th season as head coach at UChicago. McGrath ranks second in school history in coaching wins behind Joseph Stampf, who amassed a 208-118 record from 1957-75.
