Three-pointers lift Brandeis past UChicago men's basketball 59-55

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Brandeis University heated up from three-point range and erased a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat the University of Chicago men's basketball team 59-55 on Friday.

The Maroons (7-8 overall, 1-3 UAA) lost their third-straight conference game, while the Judges (13-2 overall, 4-0 UAA) stretched their win streak to six games.

UChicago's guards found success throughout the first half offensively, using their athleticism to drive the lane and then pull up for mid-range jumpers that they sank consistently. The 9-3 lead quickly shrank, however, once the Judges started feeling it from long range. Brandeis used weaves and high screens to spring their shooters for three-point looks, and they came through with four in-a-row from deep to tie the game at 17-17.

Royce Muskeyvalley responded with a three-pointer of his own and the UChicago bench sparked an 11-2 run over a four-minute span. Guard Jordan Smith and forward Ian Joyce provided the scoring both outside and inside the paint. The bench players were crucial in the half with 18 points, including seven each from Smith and Joyce.

The Maroons concentrated defensively on leading scorer Gabriel Moton of Brandeis, and the extra attention paid off. The guard turned the ball over four times while only taking two shots in the half.

UChicago came out in the second half sporting a 34-24 lead. But the Judges found their offensive flow right off the bat, scoring the first seven points of the period. Brandeis eventually took the lead 43-42 with 10:36 left in regulation. Meanwhile, the Maroons saw most of their shots draw iron and an offensive drought resulted in a shooting mark of 23 percent (6-for-26) in the second half.

It was still a one-possession game over the final minutes. A three-pointer by Muskeyvalley drew UChicago within striking range at 56-53. An offensive rebound off a miss by Brandeis paid big dividends as Alex Stoyle nailed a clutch three with 51 seconds left on the clock to put the Judges back up six points.
