ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The University of Chicago men's basketball team hung close through halftime, but No. 4-ranked University of Rochester pulled away in the second half to win 64-47 on Friday.
The Maroons (7-6 overall) evened their conference mark at 1-1. The Yellowjackets (13-0) kept their perfect record intact and went to 2-0 in the UAA.
Rochester jumped ahead 9-1 in the first four minutes of the contest. UChicago whittled the deficit down, getting within 20-16 on a three-pointer and a free throw by freshman Jordan Smith. Junior Charlie Hughes knocked down a trey and a jumper in the final two minutes to cut Rochester's lead to 27-23 at the break.
Hughes scored eight points in the half as the Maroons shot 31 percent from the field. Sophomore Alex Pyper pulled down six rebounds and totaled four points. The Yellowjackets shot 38 percent in the half, with an 18-14 rebounding advantage.
In the second half, Smith scored seven of UChicago's first nine points. That run got the Maroons close once again at 35-32. However, Rochester answered with a 16-2 run over the next five minutes and held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
John DiBartolomeo tallied 15 of his 25 points in the second half for the Yellowjackets. Rochester garnered most of its points in the post (40-22) and held a 33-27 advantage on the boards.
