ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – In its season-opening game, the University of Chicago men's basketball team struggled offensively in a 76-56 loss at Augustana College on Friday.
The Maroons dropped to 0-1 and the Vikings improved to 1-0.
Both teams played closely through the opening 12 minutes, with Augustana holding a four-point advantage. The Vikings then went on a 15-2 run over a five-minute span to open up a 17-point lead. UChicago scored the final seven points of the first half to head into the break trailing 40-30. The Maroons were held to 33.3 percent shooting (11 of 33) while senior forward Charlie Hughes led the team with nine points. The Vikings shot 56.5 percent (13 of 23) in the first half.
Augustana opened the second half with a 20-7 burst over the first seven minutes and maintained a double-digit lead for the rest of the game. The Vikings ended up shooting 49.1 percent from the field for the game (26 of 53), including 53.8 percent from three-point range (7 of 13).
UChicago shot 29.0 percent overall (18 of 62) and were outrebounded 51-28. The Maroons forced 20 Augustana turnovers while committing nine themselves.
