Muskeyvalley’s jumper in final seconds gives Maroons men’s basketball 81-79 win over Whitman at Lopata Classic

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Junior guard Royce Muskeyvalley swished the game-winning jumper with six seconds left to lead the University of Chicago men's basketball team to an 81-79 victory over Whitman College at the Lopata Classic on Friday.

The Maroons improved to 2-1 and dropped the Missionaries to 0-2 on the season.

UChicago jumped out quickly to a 12-0 lead in the opening 3:30 of the game. However, a 14-4 run by Whitman eventually tied the score at 23-23. Turnovers bit the Maroons in the first half and allowed the Missionaries to take a 48-43 lead at halftime. UChicago shot 52 percent from the field in the half but turned the ball over 13 times. Whitman hit 7 of 14 from three-point range to spur the offense.

Sophomore guard Jordan Smith led UChicago with nine points in the opening 20 minutes. Sophomore forward Nate Brooks slammed down two dunks and scored eight points. Muskeyvalley and senior guard Wayne Simon added seven points apiece.

The two teams exchanged leads all through the second half. By the end of the game, the score was tied 13 times and the lead changed 16 times. Whitman held a five-point cushion at 72-67, but senior forward Charlie Hughes made a layup and a three-pointer on consecutive possessions to tie the score. Muskeyvalley hit a three-pointer to retake the lead at 77-76.

Brooks converted two free throws with 1:21 remaining while Whitman made one of two free throws to tie the game at 79-79 with 17 seconds left. With time running out, Muskeyvalley pulled up from the left side and hit the go-ahead jumper with six seconds on the clock. Whitman could not convert on the other end and the Maroons picked up their second-straight win.

The Maroons shot 14 of 20 on field goals in the second half (70 percent) to finish at 59.6 percent for the game. UChicago also led the rebounding category 36-29, but turned the ball over 28 times compared to 14 turnovers by Whitman. The Missionaries tallied 32 points off turnovers.
