UChicago men’s basketball rally falls short in 85-80 loss to Rose-Hulman at Lopata Classic

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Chicago men's basketball team almost erased a 16-point deficit in the second half, but came up just short 85-80 against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at the Lopata Classic on Saturday.

The Maroons evened their record at 2-2 and the Fightin' Engineers (1-1) picked up their first win of the year.

Rose-Hulman owned the early lead 12-7. UChicago responded with a 12-2 run to go up 19-14. From there, the two sides exchanged baskets and eventually tied at 27-27 and 34-34. The Engineers then scored nine of the last 11 points to go into halftime with a 43-36 lead.

UChicago shot 45.8 percent from the field and made 12 free throws. Junior guard Royce Muskeyvalley led the Maroons with eight points and senior forward Sam Gage had seven points at the break. Rose-Hulman only converted three free throws, but made up for it by shooting 58.1 percent from the field.

The Engineers continued to score at an efficient clip in the second half and opened up a 16-point lead (60-44) with 14 minutes left. Rose-Hulman led 70-57 when UChicago began to catch fire on offense. Sophomore forward Nate Brooks tallied seven points during a 13-6 run, including a three-point play on a dunk. Gage stroked a three-pointer to pull the Maroons within 76-70 with 2:32 left in the game.

Two free throws and a layup by senior forward Charlie Hughes cut the deficit to 80-75, and sophomore guard Jordan Smith hit a three while fading away to make it 84-80 in the final minute. But the Maroons ran out of time and Rose-Hulman held on by hitting its free throws down the stretch.

UChicago pulled down 30 rebounds and turned the ball over 13 times. The Engineers compiled 25 rebounds and 10 turnovers. After the game, Muskeyvalley and Brooks were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
