CHICAGO, Ill. – Head Coach Mike McGrath achieved a milestone victory on Tuesday when the University of Chicago men's basketball team defeated Illinois Institute of Technology 109-46.
Now in his 15th season, McGrath passed Joseph Stampf to become the school's all-time leader in wins with 209. Stampf recorded 208 victories as leader of the Maroons from 1957-75.
The Maroons (3-2 record) looked dominant from the start by scoring the first 22 points of the game. The Scarlet Hawks (0-4 record) tallied their first points at the seven-minute mark and UChicago held a comfortable double-digit lead the rest of the way. The visitors shot 61 percent in the first half and built up a 59-17 advantage at halftime.
UChicago surpassed 100 points for the first time since Jan. 27, 2012 and also shot over 50 percent from the field for the third time this year. Six different players scored at least nine points and the Maroons held a 50-18 rebounding edge. The Scarlet Hawks also turned the ball over 21 times compared to 10 turnovers by UChicago.
