WHEATON, Ill. – The University of Chicago men's basketball team fell behind by double digits in the first half and couldn't recover in an 84-61 loss at No. 13-ranked Wheaton College on Wednesday.
The Maroons dropped to 4-3 while the Thunder improved to 4-2.
Wheaton scored the first 16 points of the game and kept UChicago off the scoreboard for the opening seven minutes. Senior guard Wayne Simon broke the skid with a three-pointer. The Maroons struggled offensively in the first half with 33.3 percent shooting and went into halftime trailing 46-27. The Thunder scored 20 points in the paint and did not allow any second-chance points in the half.
In the second half, the home side kept its lead consistently around 20 points and did not allow the visitors to get within single digits. Wheaton led the rebounding category 39-25, including an 11-4 edge on the offensive boards. Simon provided consistent offense for the Maroons, making 7 of 11 shots and scoring 16 points in 22 minutes off the bench. Tyler Peters led the Thunder with a triple-double of 25 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.
