CHICAGO, Ill.Royce Muskeyvalley and Jordan Smith hit four three-pointers each to lead the University of Chicago men's basketball team to a 66-53 victory over Trinity University (Texas) on Saturday.

The Maroons improved to 5-3 and the Tigers fell to 4-5.

Both offenses started sluggishly and combined for only 49 points in the first half. Trinity threw several defensive looks at UChicago, which effectively slowed the pace down and kept the home team from getting in a good rhythm. Through the first 10 minutes of the game, the two sides combined to shoot around 33 percent from the field.

Senior guard Derrick Davis canned a three-pointer to break a 12-12 tie and sophomore Nate Brooks provided a spark with two dunks in-a-row. The second dunk was especially highlight worthy, as Muskeyvalley lofted an alley-oop pass from the three-point line and Brooks slipped behind the zone defense to jam it home with two hands.

A three-pointer by Muskeyvalley pushed the lead to 22-14 and Smith's trey several minutes later helped UChicago go into halftime with a 28-21 lead. The Maroons struggled to a 37.0 shooting percentage in the half while the Tigers were held to 29.2 percent. Smith was the leading scorer with eight points.

UChicago scored seven of the first nine points to open the second half, but Trinity began to heat up on jumpers and pulled to within four points at 39-35. However, the Maroons responded with a flurry of three-pointers to maintain their advantage. UChicago swished four-straight treys to push the lead to 58-41 and led by at least 10 points for the rest of the game. Muskeyvalley and Smith provided two long-range bombs each in the stretch, taking advantage of holes in the zone to score their points.

The home team sank 11 three-pointers on the day, which marks the fourth time this year that the Maroons have made at least 11 in a game. They are averaging 9.1 treys per game on 40.6 percent shooting. UChicago was also dominating on the boards, holding a 45-27 edge on the glass. Brooks pulled down five offensive rebounds amongst his game-high of 12. Senior forward Sam Gage added seven boards of his own.
