CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago men's basketball team stroked eight three-pointers in the first half and maintained a double-digit lead for the whole second half to defeat North Park University 89-66 on Thursday.
The Maroons improved to 6-4 and picked up their first win against CCIW competition this year (1-3). The Vikings fell to 2-6.
UChicago surged out of the gate by scoring the first 11 points of the game. The Maroons held the lead for the rest of the game thanks in large part to hot shooting from beyond the arc. Sophomore Jordan Smith was feeling it from deep, hitting all four of his long-distance attempts in the first half en route to 12 points. Overall, UChicago made 8 of 11 three-pointers in the first half (72.7 percent).
The visitors led 21-5 and were about to run away with the game. North Park's Aaron Weaver single-handedly kept the home team within shouting distance by scoring half of his team's points in the opening 20 minutes. UChicago went into halftime with a 47-30 advantage on 60.7 percent shooting from the field. In addition to 12 points from Smith, senior forward Charlie Hughes and sophomore forward Alex Voss added nine points apiece. The Vikings struggled along to a 30.3 shooting percentage in the opening half.
The closest North Park came was 10 points at 66-56 in the second half. However, the Maroons ended any hopes of a rally with a 15-4 run. Hughes sunk a three-pointer to make it 69-56. Sophomore forward Nate Brooks threw down a dunk and scored a layup to push the score to 74-58, and senior guard Wayne Simon immediately followed up with a dunk and a layup of his own.
UChicago tallied 40 rebounds and 16 turnovers in the wire-to-wire victory. The Maroons converted 11 of 19 from three-point range, marking the fifth time this year that they have made at least 11 in a game. North Park finished with 33 rebounds and 12 turnovers on the night.
