CLEVELAND, Ohio – The University of Chicago men's basketball team fell behind by double digits in the second half and couldn't recover in a 77-58 loss at Case Western Reserve University on Sunday.

The Maroons (10-6, 3-2 UAA) had their three-game win streak halted while the Spartans improved to 10-6 overall and 2-3 in the UAA.

Both teams struggled offensively from the onset. UChicago led 10-8 through the first nine minutes as the two sides combined to shoot 9 of 38 from the field (23.7 percent). Junior guard Royce Muskeyvalley and senior guard Wayne Simon tallied 10 of the team's first 14 points of the game. However, a 14-4 run put the hosts ahead 20-14.

A dunk by senior guard Derrick Davis and two free throws by sophomore guard Jordan Smith pulled UChicago within 25-21. But Case scored the final five points of the half to go into the break up 30-21. The Maroons shot 28.1 percent in the opening 20 minutes, including 0 for 8 from three-point range. Sophomore forward Nate Brooks and senior forward Sam Gage pulled down seven rebounds apiece. Case shot 38.2 percent from the field.

The Spartans kept adding to their lead by scoring nine of the first 10 points in the second half. UChicago sophomore Alex Voss helped UChicago stay within striking distance thanks to eight-straight points on a layup and two treys to make the score 44-36.

Julien Person tallied eight-consecutive points of his own to increase the Case lead to 15, and the Maroons were forced to play catch up from there. UChicago got to the free throw line for eight points in-a-row before another Voss trey got the visitors closer at 63-51. However, the Maroons couldn't reduce the lead into single digits in the final minutes.

The Spartans led the rebounding category 41-34 and blocked nine shots on the day, with five of the swats coming from center David Thompson. Case also made 7 of 13 from three-point range compared to 3 of 19 from long distance by UChicago.
