CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago men's basketball team bombed away on Friday night with 13 three-pointers, but couldn't hold off Jake Davis down the stretch in an 82-74 loss to Emory University.
The Maroons (11-8 overall, 4-4 UAA) were previously 6-0 on the season when making at least 10 threes in a game. The Eagles improved to 13-6 overall and 5-3 in the UAA.
Emory pulled down five offensive rebounds in the opening minutes and converted them into points to lead 9-6. UChicago sophomore guard John Steinberg quickly tied the score at 9-9 with a three-pointer. Senior guard Wayne Simon finished a layup through contact in the lane to give the Maroons a 15-11 lead. Emory soon switched to an active zone defense, which temporarily flustered the UChicago attack. Senior forward Sam Gage managed to beat the zone with a three-pointer from the corner at 18-16.
Treys were falling early and often for the Maroons. Sophomore guard Jordan Smith was feeling it from beyond the arc, hitting all three of his attempts to tally 13 of the team's first 27 points of the game. Triples by Gage and freshman Alex Voss shredded the Emory zone, but the Eagles responded with efficient offense of their own to take a 40-38 lead at the break.
UChicago made 8 of 15 from three-point range in the half, but only 5 of 15 on two-point field goals. Both teams successfully snared offensive boards (nine by Emory, eight by UChicago). Smith's 13 points led all scorers, and Emory senior Jake Davis nearly matched him with 12 points and eight rebounds.
The second half went back and forth. After Emory went ahead 52-47, UChicago rallied back with a 10-2 run that was capped by another three out of the corner by Gage. The senior then muscled his way to a pair of offensive rebounds and a putback to make the score 61-56 in favor of the home team. Steinberg's three-pointer pushed the advantage to 66-57 with 7:17 left on the clock.
Emory started to catch fire on offense and closed the gap with an 8-0 run before junior Royce Muskeyvalley swished a three at 69-65. The point guard kept at it by drawing a pair of fouls, making 3 of 4 free throws and blocking a layup to keep UChicago ahead 72-67.
For the final four minutes of regulation, it was all Eagles. Their aggressive zone trap shut down the Maroons and limited them to only two points the rest of the game. Davis tied the score at 72-72 with a jumper in the paint and then put Emory out in front with a three-pointer at 75-74. Another Emory trey and four free throws in the final minute secured the win for the visitors. Davis led all scorers with 28 points and 10 rebounds.
The rebounding totals were virtually identical, both overall (36-35 Emory) and offensively (14-13 UChicago). The two teams also shot the same number of free throws, but the Eagles converted at a higher rate of 87.0 percent compared to 65.2 percent by the Maroons. Emory committed six turnovers compared to 11 by UChicago.
