UChicago men's basketball loses at Brandeis 70-50

WALTHAM, Mass. – The University of Chicago men's basketball team was outrebounded in the paint and couldn't keep up offensively in a 70-50 loss at Brandeis University on Sunday.

The Maroons dropped to 13-9 overall and 6-5 in the UAA. The Judges improved to 12-10, 4-7 in conference.

Senior forward Sam Gage started the game with a jumper and a three-pointer to score UChicago's first five points. A layup by sophomore guard Jordan Smith put the team up 11-8 six minutes in. Turnovers dogged the Maroons in the first half as they committed six in the opening 10 minutes.

Sophomore forward Eric Robinson hit a jumper and Smith followed with a three to make the score 19-17. However, Brandeis answered back with a 12-5 run to recapture the lead and eventually go into halftime with a 31-26 lead.

UChicago shot 50 percent from the field in the half, but also turned the ball over nine times. Smith led the Maroons with nine points in 17 minutes of play. Brandeis shot 48 percent from the field.

The hosts went up by 10 points at 42-32 after scoring on three-straight possessions in the second half. Both teams were blocking a number of shots in the post, totaling nine in 26 minutes of game time.

The offenses started to get rolling midway through the half and exchanged jumpers back and forth. Junior point guard Royce Muskeyvalley hit a three-pointer at 51-43 and Brandeis bracketed the basket with a pair of threes by Derek Retos. Soon after, Retos swished another three to put the Judges in control 59-45.

A 15-2 run put Brandeis ahead 66-47 and the Judges salted away the final minutes to get the win. The home team held a sizable rebounding edge 45-28 and also got a big boost from its bench corps, which outscored UChicago 34-7.

The Maroons finished with a season-high eight blocked shots as a team, with Davis contributing three swats. UChicago was held to 28.1 percent shooting in the second half.
