WPI tops Maroon men's basketball in overtime 81-79

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – A late three-pointer by the University of Chicago men's basketball team forced overtime, but No. 12-ranked Worcester Polytechnic Institute came away with the win 81-79 on Saturday.

The Maroons (2-1) absorbed their first loss in their opening game at the Hoopsville National Invitational Classic. The Engineers stayed undefeated at 3-0.

Junior guard Jordan Smith carried the offensive load in the first half by scoring 12 of the team's 27 points. UChicago was hampered by 14 turnovers in the opening half and WPI led 31-27 at the break.

A 10-1 run by the Maroons put them back ahead at 43-42 midway through the second half. The two teams went toe-to-toe the rest of the half with multiple ties and lead changes. The Engineers hit two-straight treys to go up five points with 1:25 left on the clock. Smith then sent the game into overtime thanks to a tying three-pointer with only 10 seconds left.

In overtime, WPI scored six out of eight points in the final two minutes to lead 81-76. Freshman guard Jake Fenlon sank a three-pointer with two seconds remaining to account for the final score.

UChicago owned the paint with a 49-33 advantage on the boards, which included 18 offensive rebounds. The Maroons have outrebounded their three opponents by an average of 11.7 rebounds per game. Sophomore forward Waller Perez recorded his first career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Tyler Howard scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half. UChicago ended up turning the ball over 20 times compared to 13 turnovers by WPI.
