IWU outlasts UChicago men’s basketball 61-56

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – With the game tied in the final minute of regulation, Illinois Wesleyan University scored the game's last five points to down the University of Chicago men's basketball team 61-56 on Saturday.

The No. 17-ranked Maroons fell to 5-3 on the season. The No. 9-ranked Titans won their sixth-straight to move to 6-1.

The home team scored the game's first seven points, but UChicago came around with a 9-1 run to grab the lead 13-12 at the halfway point of the period. A trio of three-pointers by the Maroons recaptured the lead again at 22-18. Overall, UChicago's last five field goals were all three-pointers as the visitors went into halftime with a 28-24 advantage. IWU struggled from the field and shot 29.6 percent in the half.

But the Titans came out with a flurry to start the second half and promptly went on a 12-2 run to go ahead 36-30. UChicago hung close from there with a big contribution from Nate Brooks. The junior forward assisted on junior guard Jordan Smith's three-pointer and then scored six-straight points himself to make the score 51-50 in favor of IWU. Smith hit four free throws and Brooks threw down a dunk with 1:13 left to tie the game at 56-56.

However, the Titans scored five points in the last 44 seconds and UChicago missed both of its shots to end the game. IWU won the rebounding battle 39-36 and also committed 11 turnovers compared to 14 by the Maroons.
