WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University scored the final six points of the game to deal the University of Chicago men's basketball team a 59-58 loss on Friday.

The No. 21-ranked Maroons (11-4 overall, 3-1 UAA) had their six-game win streak snapped. The Judges improved to 7-8 and 2-2 in conference.

Junior forward Nate Brooks made a layup, absorbed a foul and completed a three-point play for UChicago's first points of the contest. After an early tie, Brandeis went on a 10-2 run to go up 17-9. The Maroons answered right back with a 9-0 run of their own to vault ahead 21-19. Junior guard Jordan Smith was the team's offensive leader throughout the first half, scoring 11 points.

The Judges were held to only two points over a five-minute span before halftime, and the visitors seized momentum with a 9-0 run. Smith provided six of the points with two layups and a dunk. UChicago went into the break ahead 30-23. Both sides struggled to knock down shots, combining to shoot 37 percent (19-51). Brooks added seven points for the Maroons in first-half action.

Another dunk and a three-pointer from Smith made the score 35-28. Midway through the half, junior forward Alex Voss and junior guard Scott Herlihy swished back-to-back treys to push the lead to double digits at 48-38.

Brooks scored in the paint again at 52-42 with seven minutes left. From that point on, the Judges began to take all the momentum back. The home side crept back to make it a one-possession game before Voss made a jump shot at 58-53 with 2:31 left in regulation. Those would be UChicago's final points of the night. The Judges scored twice in the paint and forced the Maroons into four turnovers in the final minutes. Colby Smith sunk the go-ahead free throws with six seconds remaining and then blocked a last-second shot to preserve the 59-58 win.

The rebounds were even at 33 apiece, which broke a six-game streak of the Maroons capturing that category. Brandeis turned the ball over 12 times compared to nine turnovers by UChicago.
