Shooting woes send UChicago men's basketball to 74-58 loss versus Mount Union

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The University of Chicago men's basketball team couldn't find its shooting rhythm on Saturday in a 74-58 loss to University of Mount Union at the North Central College Tip-off Tournament.

The No. 17-ranked Maroons fell to 1-2 while the No. 7-ranked Purple Raiders improved to 3-2.

UChicago shot 21 percent on field goals in the first half, but only trailed by one point at halftime, 27-26. Sophomore guard Jake Fenlon tallied eight points in the first half off the bench, including a three-pointer that tied the score at 10-10. Five-straight points from Fenlon and a layup by senior guard Jordan Smith gave the Maroons a 25-19 lead late in the half. However, Mount Union scored eight of the last nine points to take the narrow edge into the break.

Smith and junior guard Tyler Howard canned back-to-back treys to get within one point again at 37-36. The Purple Raiders mounted another run with nine-straight points in response.

The final two minutes of the game featured 12 free throws and Mount Union extended the lead out to the final margin. Overall, the Purple Raiders sank 16 of 17 from the charity stripe. UChicago continued its struggles at the free throw line, converting 3 of 19 in the second half and 11 of 30 for the game (37 percent).

Senior forward Alex Voss put up his first double-double of the season with 16 points and a career-best 16 rebounds. Smith paced the Maroons in scoring with 21 points.

Despite 15 offensive rebounds by the Maroons, the Purple Raiders won the rebounding battle 44-39. Mount Union got a big lift from its bench with 42 points from the reserves.

UChicago led the points off turnovers category 18-6 on the day. The Maroons also took 34 shots from three-point range out of their 63 total field-goal attempts (54 percent).
