Smith's 19 points paces Maroon men's basketball to seventh-straight win, 69-65 at Albion

ALBION, Mich. – Senior guard Jordan Smith hit a crucial go-ahead three-pointer in the final minute to help the University of Chicago men's basketball team defeat Albion College 69-65 on Saturday.

The No. 22-ranked Maroons won their seventh game in-a-row, improving them to 8-2 on the season. The Britons' loss was their third in-a-row, dropping them to 4-5 overall.

Smith recorded a game-high 19 points, his highest point output since Nov. 21 against University of Mount Union. He connected three times from three-point range, but also did damage inside the arc by posting six points on 3-for-5 shooting. Fellow senior forward Alex Voss continued his hot shooting, registering a shooting percentage slash line of 50/50/80 for 14 points. Junior forward Waller Perez contributed in multiple facets with 11 points, five rebounds and five assists.

The Britons played from on top for much of the first half with the largest lead occurring midway through at 22-11. UChicago senior guard Scott Herlihy later cut Albion's lead to six with 57 seconds left in the half. Herlihy did all of his damage in the first half on the afternoon, going 2-for-4 from three and tallying eight points off the bench for the visitors.

Albion took a 35-29 lead into the break with a sizable advantage on the offensive boards with seven versus the Maroons' four. The home team also forced eight turnovers in the first period, stealing the ball three times.

The Maroons came out of halftime with a 10-2 run and grabbed the lead, 39-37. UChicago extended the stretch to 16-4 with another 6-2 spurt, stretching the advantage to 45-39 with 15 minutes left in the game. However, the Britons battled back to tie the game at 45, even taking the lead several times as the two teams battled down the stretch.

With 56 seconds left, following two Albion free throws, the score stood deadlocked at 64. The Maroons turned to Smith with the game on the line and he delivered. The senior rose up from long range and connected, giving the Maroons the 67-64 edge with 42 seconds left. UChicago relied on its defense from there on out, stopping the home team's scoring opportunities and gathering timely rebounds en route to the 69-65 win.

The Maroons shot an impressive 50 percent from the field (26 of 52), while converting 30 percent of their three-point attempts (7 of 23). UChicago ended up tying Albion in offensive rebounds with 15 apiece, and the visitors were able to take the total rebounding advantage 38-33.
