CHICAGO – The University of Chicago men's basketball team saw its 13-game win streak halted by Emory University by a score of 69-63 on Friday evening.

The No. 11-ranked Maroons (14-3 overall) lost for the first time since Nov. 21. They are now tied with Emory (12-5 overall) atop the University Athletic Association standings at 5-1.

Emory's Will Trawick took over the game from the opening whistle. The senior forward bullied his way into the post to score through traffic in the paint, and also nailed open three-pointers on kick outs. He scored the first 12 Emory points of the game and had 19 by halftime.

Buoyed by Trawick's efforts, the Eagles never trailed in the game and led by as many as nine points on several occasions in the first half. Junior forward Waller Perez got some energy going for UChicago with a dunk and a foul for a three-point play at 15-9. Four-straight points from senior guard Jordan Smith brought the home side back within four points at 20-16.

Senior forward Alex Voss scored all nine of his points in the first half to lead the scoring charge. But another Trawick trey put Emory ahead 38-29 at the break. Emory's aggressive full-court defense shortened possessions and the Maroons struggled to find any rhythm offensively.

UChicago tried to get back into the game using three-pointers. But the Maroons misfired from deep, missing 16 of 19 to start the contest and shooting 24 percent (6-for-25) by game's end. The Eagles expanded their advantage to 13 points at 49-36.

However, UChicago got onto the comeback trail with aggressiveness. Drives to hoop drew pay dirt for Perez, who scored and-one layups twice in the span of 96 seconds. Junior guard Tyler Howard contributed eight points during the stretch as the Maroons came all the way back to tie the game at 57-57.

The home side was within two points with under 30 seconds to play. The Eagles responded with clutch free throws to squeeze out the tight victory.

UChicago took the rebounding category 35-33, but turned the ball over 15 times compared to 11 by Emory. Perez put up a team-high 14 points, while Smith and Howard posted 13 points each. Voss grabbed 10 rebounds to add to his nine points. Trawick's 25 points paced the Eagles.
