CHICAGO – Despite a big scoring performance from Alex Voss, the University of Chicago men's basketball team couldn't recover from a double-digit deficit in an 84-76 loss to University of Rochester on Sunday.

The No. 11-ranked Maroons (14-4 overall) dropped to 5-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The win improved the Yellowjackets to 12-6 on the season (5-2 UAA).

Voss found his 25 points efficiently, shooting 8-for-16 from the field and 4-for-9 from behind the arc, with several threes coming late in the game with hands in his face. Junior forward Blaine Crawford and junior guard Tyler Howard chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively. Crawford used his physicality down low to great effect in the first half and made room for himself in the paint to keep the Maroons within shouting distance.

For the Yellowjackets, it was the Mack Montague show. The left-handed 6-3 junior guard scored a season-high 30 points while hitting 6 of 11 threes and 9 of 17 from the field overall. Junior Sam Borst-Smith (17) and freshman Michael Mangan (13) also shot effectively for Rochester, who ran their offense around their guards' ball handling and shooting strengths.

The Maroons broke open the scoring in the opening minute with a Waller Perez three. The junior forward added a layup for the team's two points, giving the home side an early 5-4 lead. In the game's opening 10 minutes, Montague scored nine points and hit two threes. Sophomore forward Collin Barthel's two free throws with 10:42 left in the half tied the game at 16. However, the visitors went on an 18-5 run to put themselves ahead 34-21. Rochester utilized an aggressive strategy on defense, with constant pokes at the ball and jumps into passing lanes. The Maroons sputtered on offense and Crawford's nine points off the bench proved critical as they trailed at halftime 41-31.

Senior forward Nate Brooks scored the home team's opening five points out of the break. Once again, the Yellowjackets caught fire offensively and started the half on a 19-7 run to go up 60-38. UChicago would not go down without a fight though. On three-straight possessions from the 8:48 to 7:31 mark, Voss came down and hit a trio of treys with aplomb. The senior's personal 9-2 run brought the Maroons back within 11 at 66-55.

The home team continued to draw closer down the stretch, cutting the lead to seven with 2:19 left. But Rochester made sure the ball found their guards' hands once UChicago was forced to foul and the Yellowjackets made 9 of 10 free throws in the final minute and 29 seconds.

UChicago won the battle on the boards 38-32, but the Maroons coughed up 21 turnovers compared to the 13 they forced. The Maroons owned advantages in second-chance points (15-11), points in the paint (30-22) and bench points (28-11). Rochester's effective shooting from the field (47.4 percent) and from behind the arc (39.1 percent) ultimately proved too much to handle.
