ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Chicago men's basketball team dropped its third-straight game with a 61-53 loss at Emory University on Friday.

The No. 21-ranked Maroons now sit at 14-5 overall and 5-3 in conference action. The Eagles (14-5 overall) maintained their spot atop the University Athletic Association standings at 7-1.

After falling behind UChicago 7-2, Emory turned on the jets and scored 14 of the next 15 points. Maroon senior forward Nate Brooks threw down a dunk to break the streak as the Eagles led 16-10. Jumpers were off the mark for UChicago, but the visitors eventually came back to tie the score at 21-21 after a 9-0 run. Emory suffered a six-minute drought during that time period.

Neither side was able to run efficient offense in the first half, and the halftime scoreboard read 28-23 in favor of Emory. Both teams hoisted plenty of three-point attempts and netted 6 out of 28 combined (21 percent). Junior forward Waller Perez kept the Maroons afloat with nine points and junior guard Tyler Howard posted six points of his own.

The Maroons made their move and got back within one point at 35-34 midway through the second half. Three-pointers by senior guard Jordan Smith and Howard, followed by a pair of free throws from senior forward Alex Voss accounted for the eight-point streak.

Despite the close margin, Emory maintained control and built the lead back up to seven points at 52-45. Another Smith trey at 55-51 came with 2:56 remaining in the game. That was as close as the Maroons would get the rest of the way as the Eagles closed out the eight-point victory.

Perez and Smith ended with 13 points and four rebounds apiece. Brooks and Howard put up 10 points each. All of UChicago's points in the game came from the starting five.

The rebounding category (38-35) and turnover totals (10-14) both went Emory's way. Half of UChicago's shots came from beyond the arc, but the Maroons connected on 24 percent. The Eagles made 10 three-pointers in the game.
