CHICAGO – The University of Chicago men's basketball team turned the quick pace of the game to its advantage and ran past Case Western Reserve University 89-72 on Sunday.
The Maroons (16-6 overall, 7-4 UAA) exceeded 80 points for the fourth time this year, which came only two days after totaling 94 against Carnegie Mellon University. The Spartans dropped to 10-12 overall and 3-8 in the University Athletic Association.
Senior guard Jordan Smith led all scorers with 22 points. Sophomore guard Jake Fenlon did all of his scoring from behind the arc, hitting five three-pointers at a 50 percent clip for 15 points. Junior guard Tyler Howard contributed 13 points and three steals, and senior forward Alex Voss posted 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Case senior guard Jimmy Holman had 18 points for the visitors.
The starting backcourt of Howard and Smith got the Maroons going with the home team's first nine points of the game. With 11:29 to go in the first half, Voss hit his first three-pointer of the afternoon to put the Maroons up 17-8. Smith, about two minutes later, hit his second three in as many attempts to make the score 22-14. Howard stretched the lead to 10 points a mere 20 seconds later with a layup. The junior then hit a three at 27-16 on the next possession.
Case cut the lead to eight at 36-28 with 5:58 left before the break courtesy of five-straight points; however, that is as close as they would get. UChicago responded with a 9-0 run of their own to go up 45-28 with 3:06 to go. Smith hit two free throws with 39 seconds left in the half to go up 50-34, before Case junior guard Javier Alvarez scored the final two points before the break to go into the half trailing UChicago 50-36.
Smith was feeling it offensively with a variety of jumpers and drives, scoring 16 in the opening 20 minutes. Howard's 12 also contributed to the scoring barrage. Holman carried the bulk of the Spartan offensive with 13 points and a trio of treys.
Case came out of the break ready and cut the lead to 10. The Maroons then stretched it back to 15 at 55-40. Holman continued his shooting groove for the Spartans to cut the lead to nine at 56-47 with 15:58 left in the game. With the lead slashed to single digits, UChicago turned the knob up on the intensity, exploding for 16-straight points to go up 25 at 72-47. Fenlon swished three from beyond the arc during the run and continued his shot shooting. He has now made 11 of his past 23 three-pointers (48 percent).
Fenlon's catch-and-shoot treys gave the Maroons their largest lead of the game of 28 points at 82-54. The home team integrated their freshmen into the game flow over the final minutes for the second-straight matchup this weekend.
UChicago's 69 field goal attempts were the team's second-highest tally of the season. Rebounds were even at 47-47, but turnovers bit Case in particular. The Spartans totaled 20 turnovers and the Maroons took advantage with 24 points off the miscues.
The Maroons hit 13 three-pointers, with 30 total for the weekend after making a school-record 17 versus Carnegie Mellon. They've outscored opponents by 52 points in the two wins.
