NEW YORK – Behind a career performance from senior forward Collin Barthel, the University of Chicago men's basketball team defeated host New York University 75-66 Friday in University Athletic Association play.
Barthel poured in a game-high 37 points on 12-of-18 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-3 from 3-point land and 10-of-11 from the free-throw line to help the Maroons (10-11, 6-4 UAA) win their second-straight game.
UChicago used a big second half to pull off the road win, as the Maroons trailed at the break, 37-33. Back-to-back jumpers – including a 3-point make – from senior Jake Fenlon cut that lead to just two, 44-42, at the 15:40 mark in the second half. But NYU would respond to go back up by five, before Jordan Baum and Fenlon drained jumpers and Baum added another 3 to give UChicago its first lead of the half at 51-49.
The half would go back and forth for the next several minutes before two Max Jacobs layups tied the game and first-year Dominic Laravie made a bucket inside to give the Maroons the lead again at 60-58.
That's when Barthel took over, hitting a 3 at the 4-minute mark to erase a two-point deficit followed by another triple to put UChicago up four, 66-62. The senior then made a layup and was fouled on a 3-point attempt en route to three straight free-throw makes.
Barthel would corral the next three UChicago rebounds and Baum hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
UChicago dominated at the charity stripe, making 21-of-27 attempts compared to 7-of-10 for the Violets. The Maroons also edged NYU on the boards, 31-29.
Fenlon and Baum finished with nine points each and Barthel added eight rebounds and four steals.
Ethan Feldman scored 23 points and Dom Cristiano added 20 points to lead NYU in the loss.
