Maroon Men's Basketball Cruises Past Case, 98-78

CHICAGO – Behind 26 points from senior Collin Barthel, the University of Chicago men's basketball team controlled the game from the opening tip in Sunday's 98-78 University Athletic Association victory over visiting Case Western Reserve.

The Maroons evened up their overall record at 12-12 and improved to 8-5 in UAA play with the win and the Spartans fell to 12-12, 6-7.

Barthel finished a crisp 6-of-12 from the field and added six boards and two assists. Classmate Jake Fenlon added 19 points – draining four 3s – and Jordan Baum added 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting to go with six rebounds and four assists. Rounding out double-figure scoring for the Maroons was Noah Karras off the bench with 10 points.

Case Western opened the game with a 7-3 run, but Barthel and Ryan Jacobsen both made buckets to quickly erase the deficit. The first period went back and forth for first part of the first period, with UChicago holding a slight 26-25 lead at the 8:30 mark.

That's when the Maroons began to pull away, executing a 16-4 run to go up by 11, 41-30, after a made Fenlon 3 at the 2:49 mark. UChicago led 47-39 at the half.

Fenlon opened the second half with a rare four-point play and Barthel and Baum followed with back-to-back treys of their own to push the Maroons' lead to 14, 57-43. It was all UChicago after that, as the hosts built their largest lead at the 5:14 mark, up 26.

The rims were kind to the Maroons, as UChicago shot a crisp 51.7 percent (31-of-60) from the field and 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from 3-point land while holding the Spartans to 42.4 percent (28-of-66) and 38.5 percent (10-of-26) shooting.

Rebounds were tied, 38-all, but UChicago took advantage of 28 attempts at the free-throw line, making 23 (82.1 percent).

Max Jacobs added eight points, five boards and two assists and Jake Berhorst chipped in six points off the bench, drilling 2-of-3 from downtown.

Michael Hollis led the Spartans with 18 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.
