CHICAGO – A game of offensive bursts favored the home team in the end as the University of Chicago men's basketball team raced past Kalamazoo College 100-84 on Saturday afternoon.
Both the Maroons and Hornets moved to 3-5 on the season.
After a Kalamazoo dunk put the team up 6-5, UChicago caught an offensive wave. Five points from senior point guard Jordan Baum and an and-one layup by senior guard Cole Schmitz bookended a 10-0 run. The Maroons would go on to score five-straight times down the floor and pushed their advantage to 29-12.
However, the Hornets hung in thanks to an impressive individual effort by Ben Reiter. The senior forward made his first six shots of the game and poured in 16 points to heat up Kalamazoo's offense. The visitors created numerous buckets in transition and with under five minutes left, they took a 40-38 advantage to cap a 28-9 comeback.
UChicago dug in from there after a tie at 43-43. Sophomore forward Zach Munson and first-year forward Bryce Hopkins combined to score the team's next nine points to recapture the lead. Junior forward Dominic Laravie added the exclamation point with a three-pointer from the top of the key in the dying seconds of the half to put the Maroons ahead 55-43 at the break.
The track meet nature of the first half saw UChicago convert 66.7 percent of its field goals while Kalamazoo shot 58.1 percent on its attempts. Baum was constantly finding the open man for jumpers and layups, racking up seven assists along the way.
Laravie opened the second half with an and-one layup, and the Maroons kept firm hold of its double-digit lead the rest of the way. The Hornets slowly got back within 69-58 with 14 minutes left. However, a technical foul deflated all the momentum – Baum hit both free throws and sophomore guard Ryan Martin sank a three from the right wing. Just like that, the lead stood at 74-58.
Besides hitting open threes due to good ball movement and extra passes, UChicago was able to dissect the defense with surgical post entry passes that led to layups. Baum capped his effort with a three-point play after a layup and foul, then hit another jumper on the next possession at 86-69.
The Maroons went on to reach 100 points for the first time this season. They last passed triple digits with a 114-107 overtime victory at Emory University on Feb. 10, 2019.
Laravie maintained his hot hand, making 8 of 10 field goals en route to 18 points. He is shooting 62.5 percent from the field the past three games.
Baum filled the stat sheet with 15 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. Schmitz added a double-double of his own with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Hopkins came off the bench to tally 14 points and five rebounds. Munson contributed 12 bench points. Senior guard Mattia Colangelo collected seven assists.
UChicago shot a season-high 60.9 percent overall, while making 13 of 30 three-pointers (43.3 percent). Kalamazoo made half of its field goal attempts and 9 of 20 from beyond the arc (45 percent).
Rebounding went firmly in favor of the Maroons at 35-23, as did points in the paint (48-30). The home team also held a large advantage in assists, 23-11.
