CHICAGO – The University of Chicago men's basketball team struggled to convert jumpers and the University of Rochester pulled away in the final minute to beat the Maroons 64-59 on Sunday.
The Maroons fell to 7-11 overall and 2-5 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Yellowjackets improved to 13-5 (4-3 UAA).
An early 8-3 advantage for UChicago soon gave way to a 10-10 tie. Rochester found its rhythm offensively and pushed its lead to 23-14 midway through the period. However, the Maroons hung tough from there. Consecutive and-one layups from junior forwards Brennan McDaniel and Dominic Laravie helped chop the deficit to 25-22.
Another and-one – this time from sophomore guard Ryan Martin – recaptured momentum, while layups from first-year Bryce Hopkins and Laravie in the waning seconds gave the home team a 36-35 halftime edge. Rochester point guard Kailan Lee was a terror offensively with 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting. Hopkins contributed 10 bench points in the opening half.
While the Yellowjackets made 6 of 11 three-pointers compared to 2 of 14 by UChicago, the Maroons did not commit any turnovers and also owned a 9-1 lead in offensive rebounds.
Sophomore forward Zach Munson's trey from straight away gave UChicago its largest lead of the game at 43-37. However, Rochester chipped away slowly but surely. A 19-4 run put the visitors ahead 56-47 with 6:37 left in the game.
UChicago remained in striking distance late, as Laravie's three made the score 62-59 with 22 seconds left. But Rochester held off the rally to secure the road win.
Hopkins led the squad with 12 points, while Laravie posted 10 points and seven rebounds. Martin and McDaniel finished with eight points apiece.
In the final stats, UChicago shot 35.4 percent from the field, 17.9 percent from three (5-28) and 80 percent from the line (8-10). The Yellowjackets converted 49 percent from the field, 43.5 percent from long range (10-23) and 75 percent from the charity stripe (6-8).
UChicago led the rebounding battle 35-34, including 15-6 on offensive boards. The home side committed nine turnovers compared to 14 by Rochester.
