ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Lockdown defense helped the University of Chicago men's basketball team secure a 68-48 victory at University of Rochester on Sunday.
The Maroons improved to 9-11 overall and 4-5 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Yellowjackets fell to 13-7 overall (4-5 UAA).
The 48 points were the lowest total allowed by UChicago's defense since defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 51-43 in November 2018.
First-half action featured plenty of back-and-forth play with 18 lead changes. Senior guard Cole Schmitz was the catalyst for the Maroons as he poured in 13 of the team's opening 16 points. At halftime, UChicago held a narrow 29-28 lead.
The tipping point of the contest occurred at the start of the second half. The visitors reeled off a 13-1 run to go ahead 42-29. UChicago did not allow the margin to drop below double-digits en route to the 20-point win.
Defense was crucial as the Maroons forced 19 turnovers while committing 10 themselves. The visiting side scored 19 points off those turnovers. Second-chance points were similarly lopsided by an 11-2 margin.
UChicago shot 46.4 percent from the field, 30.4 percent from deep (7-23) and 52.9 percent on free throws (9-17). Rochester converted 40.4 percent of its field goals, including 26.7 percent from long range (4-15) and 50 percent from the charity stripe (6-12).
