CHICAGO – The University of Chicago men's basketball team grew into Sunday's game and pulled away in the second half to beat Case Western Reserve University 80-61 on Sunday afternoon.

The Maroons improved their season record to 10-12 overall and 5-6 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Spartans dropped to 11-11 (4-7 UAA).

UChicago utilized an effective two-man game with sophomore guard Brandon Beckman and junior forward Dominic Laravie. Beckman consistently drove aggressively to the paint or pulled up for step-back jumpers, while Laravie set up shop on the block, utilizing his footwork in the post to score in close. By halftime, the pair had combined for 26 of their team's 37 points.

Meanwhile on the other side of the court, CWRU struggled to convert its chances, making less than one-third of the attempts. The score was tied early at 12-12, but once the Maroons grabbed hold of the lead, they did not surrender it. A 9-0 run expanded the advantage to 35-23, capped by Beckman's and-one layup.

The halftime score stood at 37-29. The Spartans showed more urgency in the second half, creating better looks and moving faster. A free throw soon tied the game at 42-42. But the Maroons immediately embarked on a 12-0 streak to give themselves breathing room by the midpoint of the half. The lead never dipped below five points from there.

Beckman put up a career-high 22 points with four rebounds. Laravie was efficient throughout with 20 points and seven rebounds on 6 of 8 shooting from the floor. Junior forward Brennan McDaniel tallied 14 points and five rebounds of his own.

UChicago shot 47.4 percent from the field, 30.4 percent from three (7-23) and 76 percent on free throws (19-25). The Spartans shot 35.7 percent from the field, 34.8 percent from deep (8-23) and 72.2 percent from the charity stripe (13-18).

UChicago owned a 38-34 edge in rebounds. The home side also scored 21 points off 16 CWRU turnovers. Points in the paint was lopsided in the Maroons' favor at 32-14.
