CHICAGO – The University of Chicago men's soccer team maintained offensive pressure throughout the evening and emerged with a 1-0 victory against Dominican University on Tuesday.
The No. 18-ranked Maroons opened their competitive schedule with a 1-0-0 record and the Stars fell to 0-1-0.
UChicago played its opener under the lights on the Stagg Field turf and came out as the aggressors. The Maroons possessed well in the midfield and attacking third to set up scoring chances. But a long aerial ball ultimately set up the game's lone score.
Sophomore defender Stacey Reimann launched a long ball up in the air to lead forward Brenton Desai in the 26th minute. Despite being bracketed by two defenders and with no teammates around, Desai absorbed contact, corralled the ball out of the air and chipped with touch to the far post from 12 yards. The sophomore led the Maroons in scoring last year with nine goals.
The home team led 1-0 at the half and continued to create in the second half with quality passing and possession. UChicago manufactured a number of dangerous chances in the box, including a goal off a short corner that was negated by an offside call in the 50th minute.
Dominican pushed for the equalizer in the last 15 minutes. But the Maroons remained solid and held the ball late to salt away the clock.
UChicago led Dominican in shots (11-5) and corner kicks (5-0) for the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Hill Bonin (1-0-0) made three saves to earn his eighth career shutout.
