CHICAGO – In a showdown between a pair of top-10 teams, the No. 5-ranked University of Chicago men's soccer team lost to No. 6-ranked Loras College by a 4-0 score on Wednesday.
The Maroons took their first loss of the season and now stand at 5-1-0. The Duhawks improved to 4-0-1.
Loras dominated possession for most of the game with aggressive man marking that pressed up on UChicago's attackers, leaving little room to navigate. The home side struggled to connect passes on offense and frequently passed back to the defenders to build up the attack. The Maroons got their best looks on long balls over the top to speedy forwards.
The Duhawks made the score 1-0 in the 20th minute with a free kick from approximately 20 yards, which came as a result of a UChicago foul. After halftime, the Maroons improved their organization and became more aggressive on moves up the field. Loras derailed a number of runs with fouls, but UChicago's free kicks did not result in goals.
The visitors broke the game open in the final 20 minutes with a trio of goals. Two of the scores came on long-ball rushes that resulted in one-on-one scenarios, while the middle goal came off a corner kick.
In the final stats, Loras led in shots 16-11 and UChicago held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Hill Bonin (4-1-0) surrendered four goals and made four saves.
