Maroon men's soccer clinches UAA title with 2-0 victory at Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Chicago men's soccer team clinched the league title and a postseason berth with a 2-0 road win against Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday.

The No. 1-ranked Maroons improved to 16-0-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The No. 19-ranked Tartans dropped to 11-3-2 and 2-2-2 in conference play.

By virtue of winning the conference title, the Maroons were awarded the UAA's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship field. It marks their fourth UAA title and second in three years. The men's soccer team earned its eighth postseason bid in program history – their third in-a-row.

On a rainy and windy day, the first score of the game came just before halftime. Freshman forward Dayo Adeosun sent his corner kick to the head of Sam Drablos, and the freshman defender directed the ball into the back of the net in the 44th minute.

UChicago maintained its lead from there and nearly doubled it in the 66th minute when junior midfielder Andre Abedian hit the post with his shot. The visitors eventually got an insurance tally via Brenton Desai in the 86th minute. The senior forward finished his chance with assists from Adeosun and sophomore forward Max Lopez. Desai ranks second on the team with nine goals this year.

Junior goalkeeper Hill Bonin (16-0-1 record) submitted a clean sheet with six saves. He set a new single-season school record with his 12th shutout, breaking a three-way tie.

UChicago held a narrow lead in shots 11-10 and corner kicks 7-5.
