CHICAGO – In a collision of high-octane offenses that created chances all afternoon, the University of Chicago men's soccer team came out on the winning end with a 3-0 triumph over Loras College on Sunday.
The No. 2-ranked Maroons (6-0-1 record) shut out their third-straight opponent. The Duhawks (3-1 record) were dealt their first loss of the year.
Both teams were offensively minded from the get-go, but it was UChicago that saw the better chances in the first half. The hosts led in shots 12-2 through the opening 45 minutes. At the 13:19 mark, senior defender Josh Scofield drew a foul in the box to setup a penalty kick for Max Lopez. The senior forward delivered on the PK to put his team up 1-0.
Within the next two minutes, UChicago took advantage of the Loras defense and earned long-ball breakaways by senior forward Matthew Koh and junior forward Dayo Adeosun. However, the attempts just missed wide each time.
Koh was particularly dangerous on the counterattack. The Duhawks played their sweeper deep enough to allow the speedy senior to remain onside on all his forays into the attacking third. Once the Maroons entered the final 30 yards, the Loras defense tightened up and blocked a number of shots.
In the 53rd minute, Lopez struck again for his sixth goal of the year. Adeosun centered the ball along the right end line and Lopez was there at the right post, sticking his foot out for a lightning-quick redirect past the goalkeeper.
A four-minute span starting in the 61st minute saw a ton of chances, mostly from Loras. The visitors turned up the pressure with eight shots in that time frame. One ball in the 64th minute hit the crossbar, with another resulting in a team save less than 30 seconds later.
That same stretch saw UChicago pad its lead to 3-0 at 63:08. Lopez found Koh open on the right side of the box, and Koh dusted his defender to nail down his team-leading seventh goal.
The final 25 minutes saw a plethora of substitutes for each side, and the shutout was secured. Sophomore goalkeeper Aaron Katsimpalis (6-0-1 record) recorded his fourth shutout in seven games played. He tallied three saves in 90 minutes between the pipes.
Shots went in favor of UChicago by a 26-18 total. Loras led corner kicks 5-4.
