CHICAGO – A record was broken and a hat trick scored in just over 21 minutes of play in the No. 2 University of Chicago men's soccer team's 7-0 throttling of visiting Carroll University Wednesday night at Stagg Field.
Koh will continue to build off the former record of 27 held by Pat Barry, as the forward now has 30 after his three against the Pioneers (0-7-1).
Lopez, on the other hand, netted his third career collegiate hat trick and added an assist to give the unbeaten Maroons (7-0-1) an early and unsurmountable lead. He scored in the 3' (via a double assist from Dayo Adeosun and Koh), 8' (Isaiah Holtquist and Carter Romero teamed up for this double assist) and 22' (Koh again), two of the three scores via his trademark header.
Rookie Vicente Mateus joined in on the action in between Lopez's second and third scores by netting his second collegiate goal in the 15', corralling a ball fed from Koh to give the Maroons a 3-0 lead.
After Lopez was finished scoring, he would find a sprinting Koh and the duo capitalized off a Pioneer defensive mistake to make it 5-0, UChicago.
UChicago's reserves – including back-up keeper, first-year Calvin Walters (one save) played solidly and kept the Pioneers off the board to preserve the shutout. Maroons' starter Aaron Katsimpalis was credited with the win, stopping two shots.
The Maroons outshot Carroll 20-5 (14-3 on goal) and earned five corner kicks to the Pioneers' 2.
