ST. PAUL, Minn. – In the opening game of the season, the University of Chicago men's soccer team produced opportunities, but goals proved hard to come by in a 0-0 double overtime tie at Macalester College on Friday night.
The No. 3-ranked Maroons ended the 110-minute contest with large leads in shots (20-8) and corner kicks (12-1). Junior goalkeeper Aaron Katsimpalis was tested twice, making saves in the 71st and 85th minutes. It marked his 15th career shutout.
By halftime, UChicago led the shots category 10-3 with a big contribution from sophomore Jorge Branco, who fired off four-straight chances between the 22nd and 31st minutes.
The second half offense evened out more for both sides but with a clean scoresheet, the game headed to a pair of 10-minute overtimes. The Maroons outshot the Scots 5-0 in the extra periods.
Branco and Sahil Modi combined to fire off 10 shots, with six on goal.
